How to Clean and Care for Your Vehicle Wrap

posted 14th May 2025
Looking after your vehicle wrap properly is essential if you want to keep it looking sharp, vibrant and damage-free for the long term - especially when you consider that a whopping 97% of consumers easily recall a brand ad on a vehicle.
Whether you’ve invested in a funky car colour change, branded van graphics, or a commercial fleet wrap, knowing how to care for a vehicle wrap the right way will protect your investment and maintain that eye-catching finish for years to come.
From routine cleaning and safe washing techniques to wrap-safe products and weather protection tips, this guide covers everything you need to know about vinyl wrap aftercare.
Read on for expert advice on how to clean, protect and maintain your vehicle wrap safely - while avoiding the most common mistakes that can shorten its lifespan or damage the surface.
Why Proper Wrap Care Matters
A vehicle wrap is more than just a colour change - it's a premium investment in your car or van's appearance and branding. But unlike standard car paint, vinyl wraps require a gentler touch and specific care techniques to keep them looking their best.
Whether you've had a full wrap, a partial design, or custom graphics applied, regular cleaning is crucial to preserve its bold colours, prevent degradation, and avoid issues like edge lifting or vinyl cracking.
With the right care:
- The colour and clarity remain vibrant
- The material resists UV degradation
- Edges and corners stay secure
- Your wrap lasts up to 7 years (or more)
Neglecting your wrap can cause premature fading, cracking, lifting at the edges and even permanent damage to the vinyl.

Hand Washing Is Best
When it comes to cleaning your vehicle wrap safely, hand washing is by far the best and most wrap-friendly method. Unlike automatic car washes - which often use stiff brushes, abrasive rollers, and high-pressure jets that can cause vinyl edges to lift, crease, or scuff - hand washing gives you full control and helps preserve the flawless finish of your wrap.
Regular, gentle hand washing using the right products and techniques is one of the most important steps in long-term vehicle wrap maintenance.

Step-by-Step Guide
Below is our expert step-by-step guide to safely hand washing a vinyl-wrapped car, van or fleet vehicle.
What you'll need
- Clean water supply (hose or bucket)
- Mild automotive detergent
- Soft sponge or microfibre cloth
- Dry microfibre towel (optional for hand drying)
Step-by-Step
- Rinse the wrap with clean water to remove loose dirt.
- Prepare your cleaning solution in a bucket (follow the detergent’s instructions).
- Gently wash the wrap from top to bottom using a soft sponge. Don’t scrub!
- Rinse each section thoroughly as you go to avoid soap spots.
- Allow to air dry or use a clean, soft towel for drying.
Frequency: At least once a week or more often if your vehicle is exposed to pollution, dirt roads or salted winter roads.
Jet Washing a Wrapped Vehicle - Should You Risk It?

Jet washing is fast, easy and tempting - especially when your vehicle’s covered in stubborn dirt, rainwater marks, bird droppings and the like. But if your car is wrapped, you need to proceed with extreme caution. Pressure washing can cause serious damage to vinyl if done incorrectly, leading to bubbling, peeling or delamination.
Did You Know? Consistent pressure washing, even with care, can dull the finish of your wrap over time - especially with matte or satin finishes.
While we strongly recommend hand washing, sometimes you may consider pressure washing for convenience. So, we'll highlight the safest way to jet wash a vehicle wrap (if you must - as there's no true safe way!), including settings, angles, distances, and potential risks to be aware of.
If jet washing a vehicle wrap, take the following precautions:
- Use a wide-angle spray nozzle (40 degrees)
- Maintain at least 2 metres (6 feet) distance
- Keep water pressure below 1300 psi
- Never spray at edges or seams
- Avoid spraying at a sharp angle - spray perpendicular to the surface
- Limit water temperature to below 82°C (180°F)
- Avoid degreasers, waxes or solvents
Important: Even with these precautions, pressure washing carries risk. As noted above, improper technique carries a high risk of leading to delamination, where the top laminate peels away from the vinyl, exposing adhesive and causing long-term damage.
Spot Cleaning & Stain Removal Tips
Even with regular washing, everyday contaminants like bird droppings, tree sap, road tar, fuel spills, and bug splatter can quickly build up and stain your vehicle wrap if not addressed quickly. These substances are often acidic or sticky and can degrade the vinyl, discolour the finish, and shorten the lifespan of the wrap if left untreated.
To keep your wrap looking pristine between full washes, it’s important to know how to properly spot clean without damaging the vinyl.

Below, we share our expert tips for safely removing common stains and contaminants from your vehicle wrap, so it stays vibrant, smooth and professional-looking for longer.
Bird droppings / Tree sap / Insect splatter
- Soften with warm, soapy water
- Let sit for several minutes before wiping
- Use light pressure with a microfibre cloth
Fuel spills
- Wipe immediately with a wet paper towel
- Hand wash the area thoroughly as soon as possible
Tar / Oil / Grease
- Use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) diluted with water
- Spot clean only, and test on an inconspicuous area first
UV, Weather and Environmental Protection
Rain, UV rays, pollutants, road salt, and smog can all take a toll on the appearance and lifespan of your vinyl wrap. Horizontal surfaces like bonnets, roofs, and boot lids are particularly vulnerable. Environmental exposure not only fades colours over time but can also cause the adhesive to weaken.
It's important that you do all you can to shield your wrap from the elements with smart parking habits, optional protective film wraps or ceramic coatings, and more.

Pro tips to reduce wear:
- Park in the shade, garage, or under a carport
- Use a car cover if outdoor parking is unavoidable
- Consider a protective film wrap for added protection
Seasonal Wrap Care Tips
Autumn / Winter Care
- Rinse regularly to remove road salt
- Avoid scraping snow or ice off with hard tools
- Use lukewarm water (never hot) to de-ice if needed
Spring / Summer Care
- Avoid washing in direct sun (soap dries too fast)
- Watch for bug splatter - clean promptly
- Use UV-protective sprays sparingly
What to Avoid When Caring for a Vinyl Wrap
It’s easy to assume any standard car cleaner or degreaser will do the job - but when it comes to vinyl wraps, using the wrong products can ruin your finish. Many common household and automotive cleaners contain harsh solvents that can stain, fade, or crack your wrap.
Common habits and substances we advise you steer well clear of include:
- Using automatic car washes
- Scrubbing with rough brushes
- Cleaning with kitchen/bathroom sprays
- Leaving bird droppings, bugs, fuel spills, or tree sap to sit
- Using polish, wax or tyre dressing on vinyl
- Wiping the wrap when it’s hot from sun exposure
- Using high-pH or citrus-based cleaners
- Applying bleach, solvent, or degreasing agents
- Scraping ice or frost with metal or hard plastic tools
- Parking long-term under leaking gutters or trees
- Cleaning in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces
- Ignoring small edge lifts or cracks, which can quickly worsen
